A linear grate is an indispensable element in many built-in shower trays. Thanks to it, the user has the possibility of evacuating the water without difficulty. But it also adds a very elegant and sophisticated aesthetic touch to this sanitary appliance.
For this reason, you may well have been interested in this type of shower tray grates. However, you may not know how to choose the right one for you. Don’t worry, don’t worry. In ParaTuReforma we will give you a hand.
Drainage and esthetics
As mentioned above, linear grates are drainage elements for the shower tray that serve a dual function. On the one hand, they manage to efficiently carry the water used during your personal hygiene to the drain so that it does not accumulate on the surface and prevent it from reaching other parts of the bathroom.
On the other hand, they also play a key aesthetic role, since they are responsible for giving a modern, sophisticated and exclusive touch to the shower. The most common nowadays is to have stainless steel finishes, but there are a multitude of alternatives.
You should know that this type of grating is not usually available in resin shower trays, ceramic or mineral filler, for example. In these cases, you will usually have to resort to other models, such as square ones.
Drainage grids
A drain grate is nothing more than a metal plate made of stainless steel or any other corrosion-resistant material. It has a smooth surface on which a series of holes are arranged through which excess water from the shower can pass.
When it does, it is directed towards a linear channel with a certain slope. The objective is that the water falls directly into the drain valve, which may or may not be siphonic depending on the case.
To all this we have to add that linear gratings offer a series of unquestionable advantages in day-to-day use. These are the following:
- Low maintenance. The grate can be easily removed for later cleaning. This also allows access to the drain to remove dirt that may have accumulated over time and use.
- High water drainage capacity. Far superior to that offered by square grids, as they are capable of collecting a greater quantity of liquid in the same time.
- Total flexibility. Another benefit oflinear shower trays is that they can be placed anywhere inside the shower tray. For example, at one of its ends or in the center. You only have to take into account the slope to facilitate subsequent drainage.

Which drainage grate to choose?
In the market we can find two types of linear gratings according to their manufacturing material. Let’s see them:
- Stainless steel linear grids. The most traditional option and the one that provides a more modern and innovative appearance. It is a very resistant material, easy to clean and allows a great variety of designs and aesthetic finishes.
- Ceramic linear gratings. They offer the advantage of integrating perfectly into the shower trays, since the material used for their manufacture is practically identical. In fact, it is possible to insert them into the tiles themselves. They usually have a stainless steel frame.
Once again we would like to remind you that, when it is not possible to install a linear grille, it is best to opt for a square grille. It fulfills the same function with the same efficiency, although it is true that they are not as aesthetically attractive.
The importance of good drainage
There are times when we do not give enough importance to water drainage inside the shower tray. This is undoubtedly a serious mistake, since poor drainage can lead to a wide variety of problems. Here are some examples:
- Mold formation. This is one of the most important. When water spends a long time on the surface of the shower tray, it is normal for fungi to appear in the tile joints. Beyond the bad aesthetics that these small living beings provide, they can be responsible for a multitude of respiratory and dermatological affections.
- Dampness. In some cases, the water accumulated on the shower tray can seep through the construction materials of the bathroom. If this happens, you will soon notice dampness on the walls and ceilings of adjoining rooms. Or, even worse, your neighbor’s.
- Bad odors. Similarly, accumulated water can even provide a rather unpleasant smelling sensation. Just think about what standing water smells like. This is especially common in shower trays that do not drain well and lack natural light when the owners are away for several days.
Trends in drainage gratings
The shower tray gratingslike any other element of bathroom decoration, are subject to the influence of trends in interior design. In fact, the linear-shaped models we are referring to here are a trend in themselves.
However, we can be much more specific. Nowadays, although stainless steel is still in a good position, users show a predilection for ceramic models. Especially when they are given matte chromatic finishes.
When installed in shower trays of the opposite color, black or white linear gratings are undoubtedly the most popular. However, functionality is not neglected in any case.
We hope that, with everything we have just told you, you will be able to choose the perfect linear grating for your shower tray. Remember that, if you have any doubts, you can contact our customer service, at ParaTuReforma we will be happy to help you!
