How to choose flooring for a room?
One of the main aspects to consider when choosing flooring for a room is the intended use of the space. Specific characteristics may be required depending on whether it is for a work studio, a children’s room, a bedroom or a recreation room.
Actually, any material can fit in any room, if we talk about design and decoration. However, its subsequent maintenance can be more complex if we do not take into account the other characteristics.
In addition to use, other factors will also influence the choice of flooring material, color and style:
- Size of the room. For example, in small rooms you can use light colors on the floor to gain a sense of spaciousness.
- Color of the walls. The tones of the floor and the walls should match. If you have a choice, choose the floor color first and then match the wall color.
- Furniture. It is important that there is harmony between the tone of the floor and the furniture.
- Lighting. Depending on the light available in the room, one tone or another in the floor will be more appropriate. For example, in spaces with little light, it is preferable to opt for light-colored floors.
- Soil type. There are different types of soil: in the following section we analyze them in more detail.
Soil types: key to choice
There are different types of bedroom flooring:
Parquet: laminate or wood
There’s no denying it: parquet is the king of floors. Laminate or wood, this type of flooring is the most common.
- It is ideal for any type of room, regardless of use, although it fits more in a bedroom.
- It has an infinite number of shades.
- It has the power to give a warmth that is hard to beat.
Laminated
Flooring made of refined wood fibers and high quality melamine resin. This type of flooring is similar to traditional parquet.
Wood
It can be made of solid wood or multilayer wood:
- Solid wood is a very nice material, although it is not the most common.
- Natural wood is more difficult to care for and has the danger of splintering.
Floating parquet
We could say that it is a quality halfway between laminated parquet and wood. It is a softer natural wood than synthetic wood.

Ceramic or porcelain
A very common option in places where there is more moisture, such as the bathroom or kitchen. However, a floor of this type can fit perfectly in any room. In addition, there is a wide variety of models, designs and colors. There are even models that imitate wood, marble, stone or cement.
Carpets
The carpets are floors made of different materials: wool, natural fibers, synthetic fibers… It is a very warm material and pleasant to the touch, especially when you go barefoot. However, it is not the best material to install, for example, in a workshop or a workspace that can dirty the floor. It is a delicate material.
Concrete
Although it is not very common, it is a possibility and increasingly fashionable. We can raise it in pavements for spaces dedicated to a workshop or study, but increasingly gain more land to other rooms of the house, such as the kitchen or living room.
Vinyl
These are floorings made of polyvinyl chloride, better known as PVC. This type of flooring is ideal for children’s rooms, studios or workshops, where the floor will have more than a simple step.
- They are highly resistant and very easy to clean and maintain.
- It is affordably priced .
- There is a wide variety of designs and colors to choose from.
Maintenance and cleaning of the room floor
Cleanliness is a critical part of choosing a bedroom floor. Most floors are easy to maintain, but:
- Wood floors require some care with their cleaning to maintain the wood’s luster over time.
- Something similar happens with carpeting : it is probably the most complicated floor to maintain, especially if liquids or any type of food is spilled.
- Ceramic tiles are made of a delicate material, but they are easy to clean. It is always advisable to do a first cleaning with an acid-based cleaner, as they are more effective in removing deposits caused by the installation and the dirt from the work itself. For day-to-day maintenance, a cleaner such as Filacleaner is ideal. The usual cleaners usually contain substances to give shine, which are deposited on the ceramic and over time form haloes and stains.
